Plants provide not only obvious benefits such as color, fragrance and blooms, but also represent vitality. For example, lotus in a pond or lake presents the essence of purity, growing out of mud and being cleansed as they emerge through the water’s surface. The oak plank boardwalk was intentionally made narrow and designed to meander through the lotus, adding drama to the crossing. The slim walkway angles off in various directions allowing the lotus to hide its true direction, which creates a bit of mystery. The area where the boardwalk crosses the pond was designed to be shallow, approximately 18 inches deep, so if one were to misstep, it would still be safe and easy to walk out of the pond or climb back onto the walk.
