Portable spas outside the United States provide a new design perspective.

Located in Geneva City, this spa is part of a three-tiered design. The bottom level contains a pool; the spa sits on the next tier; and the highest elevation contains a covered outdoor dining room.

To differentiate the area, the spa is sunken into an Ipe deck, with a back wall of the same wood, to serve as a wind break. Ipe was then added as an accent to the back of the house, tying the package together. This makes the space considerably warmer than the pool, which is surrounded by stone decking.

The designers used bushes to help distinguish one level from the next. While the spa-level shrubs are trimmed into spherical topiary, the upper foliage is planted close together and trimmed straight to form a solid hedge.

The pergola above was custom-made to allow the roof to open and close automatically.
