The city of Alexandria, Va., focused on pools and spas as it launched this year’s Building Safety Month.
A free event launched the special month. It included remarks by Alexandria’s mayor and city manager, along with training by Carvin DiGiovanni, vice president of technical and standards at the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, and Alan Korn of Abbey’s Hope Charitable Foundation.
In the two-hour class, DiGiovanni introduced building code officials to the 2012 International Swimming Pool & Spa Code, which was adopted by Virginia in 2014. Korn addressed drowning and entrapment prevention and the role code officials play in safety.
The event also included exhibits from city departments and the International Code Council.
Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign created by the International Code Council to help businesses and communities learn about safety, efficiency and sustainability in building structures. The campaign is observed worldwide by corporations, government agencies, professional associations, nonprofits and other organizations throughout the month of May.
The ISPSC, created through a partnership between ICC and APSP, outlines minimum public health regulations for pools, spas and hot tubs. It has been recognized by six states and 51 jurisdictions, including the Commonwealth of Virginia.
To date, APSP has provided ISPSC training in Montana, Massachusetts, New Jersey and other areas of Virginia.
