Mediterranean’s Modern Edge
While this sprawling waterscape features plenty of focal points to fortify every window of the house, the spa area definitely forms its emotional core. Designer Justin Fox drew the unique shape to add some curvature to the otherwise exclusively straight-lined waterscape.
“Every angle gives you a different perspective,” Fox says of the form.
In addition to its power to stun, the spa’s shape accommodates five people more comfortably, since it has no hard corners inside.
The spa sits inside a square, black infinity fountain that spills over on three sides and features a seating bench behind. Black was chosen for its reflective and depth-enhancing qualities, while leather travertine slabs frame the fountain and provide avenues to walk around or behind. A nearby fire pit and corner bench, set by the house for shelter during winter, allow exchanges with spa soakers.
This area caps a perimeter-overflow lap pool, also finished in black. For subtle sound, Fox added the long waterfeature with gently sloping, pyramid profile and 1-inch stair-steps. This configuration slows the water supplied by the bubblers on top for a more tranquil quality.
The monochrome palette of black and whitish stone throughout combines with the straight lines to contemporize the yard.
The waterscape takes up a sizable portion of the yard. To prevent it from overwhelming the space, Fox made sure that all corners and edges of the yard were visible and physically accessible. Features such as the firepit stay lower to the ground to preserve the view, while stepping stones or decking on the sides allow one to walk anywhere in the yard.
