A natural desire: For David Martine, this pool was personal — literally. In designing his home pool, the owner of Treescapes/Big Wave Pools wanted to “keep it one with nature and its surroundings.” There’s a golf course just 8 feet from the property line, so he wanted to make his backyard more private. To that end, he nestled the saltwater pool against the woods and sank the 20-by-40-foot, freeform, vinyl-liner pool in the ground. The pool features a 20-foot-long waterfall, which spills out at different spots. The rockwork is native Kansas limestone ledge rock, and it took four semi-trucks of stone to create all the pool’s effects. The deck is stamped concrete with natural stone accents. The plants also are native to the area, watered by drip irrigation.

Tranquil waters: The lighting makes for a dramatic rendezvous point at day’s end. From LED pool lights to strategically placed landscape uplighting to a firepit in the waterfall’s planter area, there is plenty beckoning stargazers to linger a while. By day, sun lovers can soak up rays on chaise lounges on the ample deck while enjoying the pool’s waterfall and two laminar arcs and a sunken, eight-person portable spa. The pool is fully automated and can be controlled via iPhone.
