Visa recently unveiled a new consumer payment method: sunglasses. The glasses feature a tiny chip on the side that will enable wearers to pay for products and services by tapping the glasses on a payment terminal.
A prototype for the glasses recently debuted simultaneously at the South by Southwest music and film festival in Austin, Texas, and the Quicksilver Pro and Roxy Pro surf competition in Gold Coast, Australia.
The wearable technology ties back to Visa’s “Everywhere you want to be” tagline, Chris Curtin, chief brand and innovation marketing officer at Visa told CNBC. “We take form factors that you don’t expect to be payment-enabled like sunglasses…and expose to the market that maybe it can be.”
The glasses are not yet available to the public.
