The design education group Genesis 3 will make its first appearance at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo this fall.

The Genesis 3 Design Group and Hanley Wood, LLC, owner of IPSPE, struck a deal to work together earlier this year. Prior to that, Genesis 3 was part of the AQUA Show, which Hanley Wood purchased in 2006.

“This year, three dynamic educational programs are being offered at one time and one place,” said Conference Manager Tracy Beaulieu. “You’ll have the Genesis 3, Backyard Living, and the Pool and Spa educational forums under one roof. An attendee can now come to the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo and be able to engage in all the education available.”

The Genesis 3 program will run concurrently with the conference, which takes place Nov. 15-20 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Exhibits are open Nov. 18-20.

Genesis 3 courses include intensive one- to 2 1/2-day classes, as well as several two-hour seminars.

“Our intent is to open people’s eyes to the broad spectrum of design, not just as it relates to pools, but to show how all those components — like scale and proportion — influence what we do with pools,” said Genesis 3 co-founder Skip Phillips.

Topics cover many levels of instruction. For example, “Elements of Design” offers an introduction to line, texture, shape, color and space. The 2 1/2-day course is one of the most popular, particularly for newcomers to the Genesis program, Phillips said.

In addition, the group offers “An Introduction to Basic Perspective Drawing.” This “bread and butter” class is held over one day and helps industry professionals master fundamental drawing skills before delving into more advanced courses.

Other 2 1/2-day classes include more specialized topics such as color theory; measured perspective drawing; waterfeatures; and the history of water in architecture.

Two-hour seminars will be held on exhibit days and will address diverse topics such as pool and spa hydraulics, fire features and site analysis skills.

Two-and-a-half-day sessions take place the afternoon of Nov. 15, and all day Nov. 16-17. The single-day course, “An Introduction to Basic Perspective Drawing” will be held Nov. 17. Tuition varies depending on course length, and there’s a discount for students who register before Oct. 7.

The two-hour courses are included in Expo registration.

More socially oriented events will take place as well. The Genesis 3 Lifestyle Program, held the afternoon of Nov. 18, introduces attendees to winemaker Gary Eberle of Eberly Winery, who will pour some of his vintages and discuss wine. That night, the Genesis 3 Family Reunion and Winemaker Dinner will be held at the Palms Resort Casino.

Genesis 3 was founded in 1998 by Phillips and fellow builders Brian van Bower and David Tisherman. The group holds design and construction classes around the country.
