After posting its first gain of 2008 in July, the Consumer Confidence Index trekked upward again in August to 56.9. Short-term consumer expectations grew slightly, and those expecting business conditions to worsen decreased. Nevertheless, the reading still suggests “the economy remains stuck in neutral,” said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, and any major change is still around the bend.
