IPSPE Issues Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge

A new contest is meant to test professionals' design chops -- and attract students into the industry.

In a bid to encourage design exploration and attract students to the pool/spa industry, two professionals have partnered with the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo to present the Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge.

For this contest, entrants will design a pool and backyard that would be valued at approximately $1 million for a fictional customer. Organizers will provide information about the “client” and site, along with other information that would help inform the design. Judges will choose five finalists, who will then present their creations during a seminar at the IPSPE, to be held in Las Vegas Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The overall winner will be chosen by seminar attendees and announced later at the show.

The creators of the contest, Dallas-based designers Mike Farley and Reid Schindler, are modeling the program after similar ones seen in the architecture and landscape architecture fields. The duo wanted to accomplish several objectives with the contest: Attract professional and student designers from other design-related fields, provide an opportunity for current pool/spa designers to stretch and test their abilities, and open up discussion by viewing the various solutions that designers use.

They particularly would like to draw design students to view the industry as a viable career venue. To help with this, organizers will reach out to university design programs across the country. One of the five finalist spots will be reserved for a student. And the team is currently seeking a sponsor to help fund the student’s trip to the Expo.

Organizers are setting up a website, which will provide project details. Entries must be submitted digitally through the site by Aug. 31. Students have until Sept. 14, as their fall sessions will just be starting. Participants are limited to one entry each.
