Oh, What a Patio

In Saratoga County, N.Y., a backyard that was little more than dirt provided Mike Giovanone, president of Concord Pools and Spas in Latham, N.Y., the blank canvas he needed to thoughtfully plan a patio packed with features. These include a pool house with a bar, fire pits and multiple areas for dining and lounging.

As with any project like this, the challenge here was to fit all the items on the clients’ wish list into a defined space without making it look or feel cluttered.

To achieve this, Giovanone depended on a decidedly low-tech method of space-plotting. Starting from the back door of the kitchen, as though carrying a tray of food, Giovanone walked around each of the planned spaces, getting a sense of proximity and layout and making adjustments as needed to ensure there was enough breathing room between each zone.

This design called for two fire pits. One is located just outside the kitchen, intended for small family gatherings. The other, a sunken conversation pit in the corner, facilitates large cocktail parties.

The patio comprises at least six different paver styles of varying earth tones, with a contrasting band of stamped concrete around the pool and spa.

The pool, which forms something of a symmetrical kidney, evokes the patio’s curves, concentric conversation pit and circular fiberglass spillover spa.

These details can be appreciated from inside the home as well, as tall windows overlook the well-appointed outdoor space.
