Marrying the appeal: The design originally called for a basic fiberglass pool with a tanning ledge, but the look didn’t tie into the existing backyard. To blend the pool with the patio, Brandon Miller suggested touches that provided a more cohesive aesthetic to the tight space. For instance, the patio supports, shown on the previous pages, showcase the same split-face stone as the two columns flanking the custom tanning shelf. The columns are topped with copper fire and water features, which mirror the patio’s copper gutters and unique downspouts. “[They] are actually small copper cups on a chain that reach from the roofline down to the ground, and go into a copper catch pan that sit on a travertine pedestal,” Miller adds.

Considered design: Adding the tanning ledge to a fiberglass pool takes planning — long before construction starts. For this project, a 33-foot Elegance model by Leisure Pools was customized during manufacturing so that it would be able to accept the tanning ledge and have a proper, watertight seal, Miller says. This feature was just one of the many touches added to prove that a fiberglass pool doesn’t have to be just a shell surrounded by concrete. To match the tanning ledge, Miller utilized a glass tile pattern by National Pool Tile that complemented the form. “People are gravitating to that elegant look that they never thought they could get with a fiberglass pool,” Miller adds. “It’s a finishing touch, an accent piece for it.”
