Even as homeowners are forced to cut costs in the down economy, relatively few will cancel their pool service. However, they may stop paying their bill.
For any customers chipping in an extra $15 or $20 each month for a rental, the profit loss can add up quickly.
“I have a much shorter rope with the people who have the cleaners,” says Mark Montegani, owner of Pool Heaven in Huntington Beach, Calif. “If they miss a month of payment, I almost have to go over there, take the cleaner and stop service immediately.”
On the upside, removing the equipment gives the service company justifiable reason for the immediate cancellation of service. Any allowances on late payment may simply be a matter of customer loyalty over the years.
