With staff hired mainly based on communication and work ethic, Gohlke must train them from scratch. All receive Certified Pool Operator instruction, testing and certification. After an appropriate ride-along period, each tech is paired with a mentor for monitoring and one-on-one training.

New techs undergo a structured 24-month training program. In addition to ride-alongs, new techs earn several certifications, including IPSSA Water Certification, CPO status, and the L.A. County Health Department license. After six months, they gradually go out on their own.

In-season, this company holds weekly one-to-two-hour training sessions. Off-season, it's one all-day session per week. A tiered ranking structure, from junior to senior technician, sets requirements for advancement, with senior techs incentivized based on the success of the junior techs they train.

This mostly commercial service company pairs inexperienced team members with a seasoned coworker for 12 to 18 months, operating up to 30 pools and spas. Off-season, the team has biweekly courses at the instruction center, which consists of a fully equipped commercial pool.

After a structured four-week training program, new techs take a written exam and a Board of Review is held before they become junior technicians. The probationary tech handles lower priority calls and supports senior peers on complex jobs. After about 90 days, they take another exam and Board of Review to become Field Service Technician I.
