As part of the application process for the Pool & Spa News Top 50 Builders, companies provide a rundown of the revenues generated from the year before. It’s always impressive. And with the economy in such a healthy state, the dollars generated continue to go up each year.

Here, we’ve named the top 10 earners in different revenue categories.

This figure — a combination of new residential construction and renovation — is used as one of the five judging criteria, meant to indicate a company’s strength in the residential space. The Class of 2019 reported a combined $913.4 million in residential construction revenue in 2018 — a 12% hike over last year’s figure of $816.8 million in 2017. Six of this year’s highest earners hail from the Lone Star State.

Each year, we ask Top 50 Builder applicants to report their total income for the year before. It always yields an awe-inspiring number — and this year is no different. In 2018, Top 50 Builders generated a total revenue of $1.14 billion. This represents an increase of approximately 10% over last year’s group, which earned a combined $1.04 billion in 2017. As seen below, our 2019 Top 10 earners reported similarly impressive figures, with each earning in the tens of millions.

In tallying the scores that determine each year’s Top 50 Builders, new residential construction revenue is combined with renovation earnings to arrive at Total Residential Construction Revenue — one of the most heavily weighted judging criteria. As sales continue to increase, new construction has definitely become the main focus for the Top 50. At least on the residential side, new construction accounted for 89% of Total Residential Construction Revenue in 2018. This group earned the most in new construction.

With the booming economy, renovation continues to take a backseat to new construction. This year, it only comprised 11% of the residential construction reported by the Top 50. Despite that fact, these 10 builders have made a pretty penny from their renovation operations. Orange County, Calif.-based company Alan Smith Pools, a pool finishing and renovation specialist, topped this list.
