H&H Pool Services, the Dublin, Calif.-based firm owned by long-time industry leader and educator David Hawes, has sold to Cabana, a San Diego area firm that is growing throughout the state through acquisition.

For decades, H&H was known as one of the largest service and maintenance companies around. Hawes, who founded the firm 55 years ago as a teenager, had long ago adopted the approach of working on the business instead of in the business. An active member of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association (IPSSA), he has served as president and for a long time was its CFO. Hawes has been a proponent of service company owners putting as much energy into the business side their companies as they do in the technical and operations side. He has regularly taught business classes specifically for service techs, and he founded California’s Pool & Spa Apprenticeship and Training Committee, which offers an apprenticeship program and on which he continues to serve as president and chairman. He has also served as a director of Pool Industry Expo.

Cabana, founded in April of 2024, immediately adopted an aggressive growth plan. Having started serving San Diego, it now also serves multiple locations in Los Angeles, Orange, and Sacramento Counties. H&H is the second San Francisco-area company that has been acquired by the firm. In June, Cabana purchased Aqua Pool Company, a 34-year-old company based in Concord, Calif., and formerly owned by Todd Ferro.

According to Cabana, H&H fits the consolidator’s strategy of partnering with established, owner-led pool companies while providing those businesses with additional operational resources and support.

“David has spent decades proving that exceptional quality and attention to detail work, and his team reflects that,” said Cabana Founder Jeremy Yamaguchi. “Bringing H&H aboard is exactly the kind of partnership we’re built for. Our job now is to support the team and give them room to keep growing.”

Cabana says its strategy centers on professionalizing pool service through improved technology and business tools, technician training and clearer career opportunities for field employees.
