As 2016 comes to a close, Pool and Spa News is taking a look back at the most popular stories of the year. Whether you’re seeing the headline for the first time or you’ve already heard the news, follow along as we recap the hottest industry topics, based on google analytics.

Coming in at No. 10 this year is a story about the Garden State. When the Northeast Spa & Pool Association took one step closer to seeing its entire territory having licensing laws, we made sure we go the scoop.

No. 9 this year is our 2016 Top 50 Builders list. Always a favorite among industry members, our annual roster highlights the firms that score the best in a multitude of categories, including revenue and other stats. Here we honor a group that has demonstrated, among other things, its strong commitment to training, community and industry involvement.

No one really likes to hear about pool builders with a bad reputation, yet it seems everyone still wants to read about them. Who knew that when we published the news this fall about Richard Lawrence Woods, president of Paradise Pools in St. Augustine, Fla., who had been charged with four counts of fraud and turned himself in, that it would be this year’s eighth most read story.

Always a trending topic on PoolSpaNews.com, PoolCorp appears in two of the top headlines on this year’s list. First it was the news that after a Louisiana court sided with PoolCorp in an anti-trust case against it, both sets of plaintiffs had appealed. We’ll see PoolCorp again later on this list.

Saving money and protecting the environment have never been more popular endeavors. Today’s homeowners are seeking the best and most affordable ways to enjoy their swimming pools, so of course, if a study reveals the impact a pool cover has on the wallet and on the planet, our readers are all about it. Hence, the sixth most read story of our list.

There perhaps is nothing worse for the industry than homeowners filling in their pools. So when a city in Arizona began offering incentives to do so, the industry took notice.

When a contractor was has arrested for doing pool work without a pool service and repair license in the state of Connecticut, we got the story. After all, it was the first time to happen in the state.

PoolCorp returns to our list in the No. 3 slot with the “almost” ending of its major case. Although it may have ended in a fairly undramatic fashion, it seems readers still were interested in the the anti-trust case involving the megadistributor.

When the news broke about Mitch Brooks’ arrest, the industry turned to Pool and Spa News for coverage of the breaking story, making it our No. 2 story of 2016.

And the No. 1 story of 2016 is … a very important discussion regarding suicide and construction workers.
