Garden State professionals anxious about complying with recent licensing legislation can relax for now.

Earlier this year, the state passed a law mandating specialty licenses for pool/spa builders and service firms. To qualify for the three-year licenses, professionals must earn the appropriate APSP certifications or apply for grandfathering, which the legislation allowed through July 30, 2021 to those who qualify. After that, all companies must earn the designated certifications.

While the law states that companies must comply by July 30 of this year, the N.J. Division of Consumer Affairs recently issued an alert stating that licenses are not yet available. It is not yet known when licensing will begin, so the Northeast Spa and Pool Association recommends checking periodically. Once licensing has been put in place, the Division of Consumer Affairs will extend the allowable grandfathering period to two years after licenses become available.
