Giving back. It’s something the pool and spa industry is good at. For example, there’s the package-pool builder who rallied industry colleagues to help construct a pool for a 7-year-old leukemia patient – and the pool service technician who bakes cookies in the off-season, with the proceeds going to send kids with life-threatening illnesses on all-expenses-paid vacations with their families to Orlando theme parks.

Those are but two instances when pool and spa professionals have responded not only to calls for help, but stepped forward where they saw they could make a difference. Recently, another pool professional’s good deed came to light.

Glenn Douglas, owner of LA Custom Pools & Spas Inc. in Yucaipa, Calif., is donating time and money to build a specially designed pool for a decorated soldier who was injured in Afghanistan. Homes for Our Troops built an adapted home for U.S. Marine Cpl. Justin Crabbe, who had suffered limb losses when an IED exploded in 2011. Crabbe approached Douglas to design a pool for his new home and the builder not only agreed, but offered funds for pool construction. In addition, the Semper Fi Fund contributed monies, and Douglas’ own crew chipped in. Douglas also asked the city council to waive the permit costs, and the council waived the building plan check, permit and inspection fees for construction of the pool.

The pool is scheduled for completion in summer 2015. Read More
