The former administrative head of the National Plasterers Association was granted a continuance on his case.
Mitch Brooks' jury trial original was set to begin Jan. 16 at a Florida Circuit Court. Later this month, the court will determine a new date for the proceedings.
In January, 2016, Brooks was taken from his home in Port Charlotte, Fla. and charged with three first-degree felonies, including two counts of grand theft in the first degree of $100,000 or more, and one of racketeering. He was accused of taking more than $1 million from NPC through fraudulent bookkeeping practices, in his capacity as owner of Visioneering Consultants, the company contracted to manage NPC.
Brooks pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Brooks was imprisoned for more than a year as he tried to gain release through a reduction in bail. A state appeals finally lowered it from $1.5 million to $110,000. He was placed on an electronic monitoring program. He also had to surrender his passport and was prohibited from communicating directly with the NPC.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 90 years.
