Each summer, our sister publication, Aquatics International, honors 10 commercial facilities and waterparks with the moniker "Dream Designs." This year's package included a renovation that a contractor could appreciate. Shawnee Municipal Swimming Pool was built in the 1930s as part of the federal Works Progress Administration program. After 78 years, it needed serious refurbishment, but the city had a limited budget. After assessing what could and could not work after nearly eight decades, the designers found some pretty clever ways to retain certain parts of the massive pool and transform them into something else. They also took certain design elements, such as the bath house roof, back to their original roots. The designers found several ways to control the budget, even keeping some equipment that was deemed usable after a facility-wide assessment.
