The speed at which energy-efficient products are coming to the marketplace is astounding. An example of this came from my son, who was visiting a friend for a swim in his pool.

None of the neighbors had yet been able to use their pools because the water temperature was too cold. The outside temperature for the past three days had been 85 degrees, but the previous three weeks had cooler weather. Why was one pool usable and others not?

My son’s friend had put “hula hoop-like” solar rings into his pool and installed new “high-tech” return jets, which were pointed down at a 45-degree angle. The directional jets had openings that not only drove the return water toward the bottom of the pool, but also directed some of the upper warmer water under the solar rings — voila! Solar heating a la carte.

Isn’t innovation great?!
