Architects in western North Carolina have developed a signature look for the area by mixing natural materials with cleaner, modern lines.

“They call it Mountain Modern. I call it rustic luxury,” says Mark Dorsey, president of Medallion Pool Company in Arden, N.C.

That was clearly the task at hand in designing this hillside poolscape with an accompanying stream and waterfall. The aesthetic of the home was a perfect example of the region’s style, and architect Amy Conner-Murphy designed the new guest house and contributed to the backyard environment with that ideal in mind.

Dorsey, a licensed civil engineer who recently won Master Pools Guild’s top design award, answered in kind, with this sweeping arc of a vanishing edge that matches clean lines with rustic materials.
