2010 Masters of Design Winner:
Jeff Lokker, Huntington Pools & Spas

For this award-winning project, designer Jeff Lokker was hired to renovate a nearly 100-year-old pool. The 1920s Spanish colonial home was influenced by Moorish architecture, so Lokker and his team erected a fountain and employed other design details to mirror that style.

Top 50 Buzz

Ron RobertsonWhat new initiative are you working on?
We’ve gotten very lean and made everybody a lot more accountable, so we can do a lot more with a lot less. We’re more aware of waste and usage of materials and how we purchase things.

How does it work?
We’ve made a change with how we purchase plaster, for instance. We do all our own plaster work, and we used to buy the materials already packaged in different colors. Well, we found that we had all this material that we couldn’t use. We had half bags or half pallets of different colors, and the dye lots had changed or the material had gone bad because it already had mixed with cement and gotten hard so we couldn’t use it. We realized we would waste $30,000 to $40,000 a year.

Now, we mix our own recipes. We buy a base that’s a white-based material, whether it’s plaster or quartz or pebble, and we mix our own recipes. In this case, we’re going to put in blue quartz or black quartz and a certain dye, and that’s our product. My guys have to use more control when mixing the product to keep the color consistent. We have a recipe recommended by the product manufacturers. [By doing this], we use every bit of material that we buy.

  Field-Tested Tips

Working With Vinyl Liners
When installing or replacing a vinyl liner, if you must use duct tape to temporarily secure the liner, pick a brand made from vinyl. Many types of duct tape are made with cloth, which is an organic substance, and thus home to microorganisms that can quickly stain and degrade a vinyl liner.

“Pink and purple staining, which is a huge problem with vinyl liners, is actually the excretions from microorganisms,” says Michael Giovanone, president of Concord Pools and Spas in Latham, N.Y. “It’s called microbiological staining, and it comes up through the vinyl from the back.”

While shocking the pool will dissipate the appearance of the problem, this is only a temporary solution. Until the infection is destroyed, pink stains will continue to creep back through the liner. The easiest way to avoid this issue is simply to avoid organic duct tape. Vinyl-based tape is inorganic, so it poses no threat to the liner.

Find more tips on dealing with vinyl liners in Liner Notes, which appears in the June 25 issue of Pool & Spa News.
