Business Tip
Recruiting in a Downturn
When unemployment rates soar, businesses with open positions can be inundated with job applications. With little manpower to sort through hundreds of resumes, small businesses may be overwhelmed when trying to find the right candidate.
That’s why they may end up hiring sub-par staffers, says Michael Mercer, a Barrington, Ill.-based human resources consultant and author. Here, he offers tips to ferret out the best person:
- To cut down the stack of resumes, first match each resume with the listed job requirements. Also, look at how long they have stayed at each job; avoid job hoppers. And, toss resumes that are poorly done. There are too many competent workers out there to spend time on lazy candidates.
- Figure out which traits make for a good employee. List the must-have qualities that made the previous job holder so valuable. Then, narrow the resume stack to candidates who fit this profile.
- Have the approved applicants take an online pre-employment test — before they come in for an interview. These tests more accurately predict fit than any other method (checking references, interviews, etc.), Mercer says. The results can reveal traits related to teamwork, focus, problem solving, work ethic, honesty, etc. Decide what’s most important to the position, and interview only those who score well in these areas.
- Interview the screened applicants. Prepare relevant questions ahead of time. Consider including someone else in the interview who can serve as a second opinion.

MOD Design Tip
What great design concept are you working on?
The more natural pools have always been the balance of our business. Several of our recent installations have manufactured cobblestone pavers on the whole deck.
How does it work?
They use a lot of cobblestone in Europe, and they give you a really old-world, natural look. We use this product to compete with the installers who do stamped concrete. We use it for coping, as well.
I like how they retain their look. They don’t lose their color. And you never have a problem with cracking on the deck. It’s all laid on sand, so if something happens to one, you can just take it out. If you have to do an under-deck repair, you just lift the stones out, do the repair and put them back — and nobody knows you’ve ever been there.
