Business Tip
How to Prevent Employee Theft
Small businesses can minimize opportunities — and the temptation — to steal before the fact. Here’s how:
- Perform background checks. Make sure that you contact previous employers to identify misconduct involving stealing or fraud, and consider obtaining a criminal history. If you order a credit history, make sure that your provider complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
- Supervise your employees. Research has shown that businesses with low levels of employee supervision have high rates of internal theft. Supervision not only deters theft, but also alerts you to telltale signs, such as a change in an employee’s spending habits.
- Make it hard to steal. Limited staff and resources make it difficult for small businesses to segregate functions, but wherever possible, don’t allow only one person to handle the money. Conduct unscheduled audits of inventory and bookkeeping. Limit access to and use of technology and sensitive information like customer lists.
- Map out a fraud-avoidance plan. This can include periodic background investigations; changing and checking computer passwords; using internal and external auditors; and establishing consequences for theft and applying them consistently. Be sure to include procedures on termination, such as canceling building or technology access and reminding departing employees of their ongoing obligations under noncompete and confidentiality agreements.

What new initiative are you working on?
We’re always working on something new to try to stimulate business and create a separation between us and our competitors. One of the ways we’ve been doing this is developing a new product called Aqua Bright for pool interiors.
How does it work?
This is actually a product that has been used in other industries, which we have taken and altered for pool finishes. It is not a paint or plaster, but a poly thermal material. It is used to line the inside of drums for chemical shipping and is applied to the hulls of boats.
We’ve taken that material and developed an application process for pools and spas. We’re actively looking for dealers outside of our market who would be interested in purchasing the product from us.
Fiberglass pools are building in popularity. I think one of the reasons is the finish that they have — it’s nonporous, so algae won’t stick to it. That’s very similar to our product. It’s a nonporous and durable product that withstands UV rays and acid.
