Sneak Peek

Bridge to Everywhere
With renovations becoming a larger piece of the total pool market, it only makes sense that pool builders would team up with landscape professionals to take them on.
On this renovation project, the design team expected to do a simple facelift for an oversized and dated kidney-shaped pool. But when they showed their customers all the possibilities, the homeowners were amazed — and expanded the project. See how the team transformed this pool into something more fitting for the higher-end home.

MOD Design Tip
What great design concept are you working on?
We’ve been incorporating more aviaries and turtle habitats in our backyard designs. People are starting to bring wildlife into their backyard.
How does it work?
They’re both fairly simple. The aviaries are screened-in structures. We’re currently designing our largest one — it’s 30-feet-by-15-feet. We’re building a solid-roof arbor and putting the aviary right next to it. It has a pitched roof that’s all screened in. Any aviary has to fit in with the whole flow — it can’t block a view or be an eyesore. On this project, the pool is vertical in the yard and the aviary is behind that, so it draws your eye toward it.
Our turtle habitats are more of a lattice structure, because turtles need some shade. Usually we put about 75-percent shade on a portion of it and leave part open. The turtles have to be enclosed with a block structure, and you need about a 12-inch footing so they can’t dig out. We don’t use a lot of plants, but when you do, you have to be careful with what you choose because turtles will chew things. Usually, we just put in some dead tree branches and bury them so it looks natural. We also did one that had cactus and a pond, and the turtles liked to go under the rocks to keep cool.
