Sneak Peek

Seeing the Positives
The year 2009 was a terrible one for the pool and spa market. But rather than focus solely on the negative, we decided to take a more upbeat approach by asking industry members to report the high points of their year and discuss what gives them hope for 2010. As it turns out, they had plenty to say.

What new initiative are you working on?
We’re redoing our Website and focusing on Website optimization. Marketing is really what we’re working on, because it’s going to be very important for the next nine months. But, we’re also using our site to become more efficient.
How does it work?
Besides improving the look of our Website and enhancing optimization, we’re fixing it so the homeowner can log in on their account and see the schedule for their pool. We feel it [provides] better communication. And, we’ll be able to sell more pools with that kind of an edge, where the homeowner is more interactive with their construction. Subcontractors also will be able to log in ... and see schedules. It’s just good organization. We’re slow now, so we have the time to do things like this.

Retail Snapshot
We feel very fortunate. Our market has had only slight changes. Customers who used to hire us to clean their pools are coming into the retail store to buy product because they’re doing the service themselves. They’re looking to save money. We’re just glad to keep the customer.
Right now, we are tallying the points our customers have earned last year through our [frequent-shopper] program. For every $500 they spend, they get a $25 gift certificate. We hope they’ll redeem them right away, but a lot of folks will wait until spring.
This is the second year doing this with our computerized point-of-sale system to track it all — we had been using a punch card in the past. We’re starting to see the payoff from the high-tech system because now we also can see their sales history, not just that they bought something from us. There’s a real positive impact with this program: It stimulates sales, and it puts your name out there. If nothing else, it gives us an opportunity to thank our customers for their business throughout the year.
