Service Tip

While poorly balanced water could be responsible for a damaged salt chlorine generator cell, but a sloppy installation can create problems as well. Generally speaking, you’re suppose to allow enough PVC to cover a distance of five-times the pipe diameter in and out of the salt cell to decrease turbulence. For example, using two-inch PVC would require 10 inches of straight pipe in and out of the cell. Without that allowance, nearby 90’s can cause vortexes and air bubbles that will prematurely wear on the unit. A proper flow through the cell will ensure a longer product life.

MOD Design Tip

Stefan ThuilotWhat great design concept are you working on?
I try to be as ecological as possible. To that end, we are working on one enormous residential project where the landscape will be more or less independent from city water, and we try to not bring any surface water back to the city system. We’re introducing a lot of native material, and use 40,000-gallon cisterns below the ground to capture all the rainwater from the roof.

Permeable concrete paving is used in many places, so we keep water at the site rather than having runoff. It’s basically sand bound together by a natural binding agent. The pavers are extraordinarily beautiful, and water just goes through them. They are put on sand and a very deep gravel base – about 10- or 12 inches.

We are also convincing the architects to use a living roof, planted mostly with grasses. They cut down on the need to use air conditioning, and rain doesn’t run off in concentrated rates into the garden.

Retail Snapshot

Elaine HaynesWe’re completely slow. Nothing’s going on. It’s just been really bad this year, because of the economy. There’s not much you can do about it but we’re trying.

We still do our leads on spas and pools through our manufacturers. That kind of contact has been working to get customers through the door – they almost always get back to us after we email them a price sheet. But still, we have not sold any inground pools at all this year.

But luckily our aboveground pool sales have increased! We’ve had to offer a lower brand in addition to our regular Doughboy, and now all these customers are buying that brand because of the price. If it weren’t for that, we wouldn’t have nearly as much revenue this year.
