Service Tip
Staining on vinyl-liner pools can be a result of poorly chosen products. Adhesives and coatings used during installation can cause stains from behind the liner if they’re not compatible with the material. Make sure any products used for vinyl-liner replacements are made specifically for pool applications.
Similarly, some acid-based cleaners can cause premature deterioration in the vinyl. If you do choose an acid-based cleaner, make sure the vinyl surface is completely rinsed off after application.

Masters of Design Tip
 What great design concept are you working on?
There is so much going on in the world right now, with fear and health issues, that I’m dealing more with water [as an element of] health and healing.
How does it work?
I’m working with a woman who’s at her five-year mark for surviving breast cancer. I work with feng shui, and one important aspect is that you [provide] a flow through the garden. She only had one door going out the backyard before. We added a door out of her master bedroom so that she could walk through the garden ... and come back in the house at another point.
Part of the healing is the beauty that we’re giving her. Before, when she looked out her window, she couldn’t see anything. Now she has a beautiful grove of maples that are uplit, and then there is a waterfeature in the foreground. She wanted an Asian style, so I created an overflowing vase fountain that seems to be fed by a bamboo stalk then spills into a hidden underground reservoir.

 “Right now, we’re focusing on one customer at a time. We realize the value of our customers, and do not take them for granted. That means we return calls immediately … and do the little things. And, it’s working. People are appreciative. When times are good, you feel like you can relax, but that will hurt you. You have to make sure your customers are well taken care of, because if you don’t take care of them, someone else will.
“We’re also building new relationships with management companies for hotels, motels and apartment complexes. Because of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, we’ve been able to pick up a sizeable amount of new business. We are bringing their pools into compliance. It’s intriguing to build these new relationships. They need people from their home towns to work on the pools. They can’t get this done online. In the past, we’ve had a hard time breaking into the commercial market, but this hasn’t been hard at all.”
