Service Tip
When diagnosing stains, most techs associate the color purple with magnesium that has come out of solution. However, this isn’t always the case. Copper cyanurate can leave a purple residue along the water line and steps of any pool. Copper cyanurate is formed with a high level of cyanuric acid and any copper that has come out of solution, likely from low alkalinity and pH. If magnesium isn’t in your source water, make sure the copper in your pool is protected from corrosion to avoid these unsightly purple stains.

What great initiative are you working on?
I’ve increased my market share in the last two years from 4 percent of a 10-county area to 25 percent. I want to raise that more, so we’re branching out with new offices.
How does it work? We have just opened our first expansion office in Jacksonville, Fla., and plan others in Tampa and Fort Pierce.
What I do is find small pool contractors who have struggled and say, ‘This is our business plan, this is our marketing plan. We’ll train you and your people and market your business, and within 30 days we’ll have you up at a level you’ve probably never been before.’
It allows us to come into an area to start with someone who knows the area. They have to go through fairly strict scrutinization to make sure that their way of thinking and business practices are in line with ours. Then we come to an agreement and start a branch of Holland Pools.

Snapshot
One issue we have is that we don’t have national financing right now. Around 50 percent of our business was financed nationally. Now, a lot of our customers are paying cash. They say, ‘If I can’t afford to pay cash for it, then I won’t buy it.’ It’s surprising that there’s as much cash out there, [allowing people] to buy pools as there is. People still want pools. They just don’t get as big of a pool, but they are buying something.
To reach these customers, we’re doing more grassroots advertising and revamping our Website... offering virtual tours. Because people are staying at home more, they are on the Internet more. And if they are going to spend the money, they are going take more time to research. So, we’re spending our time and money to make sure that the Website stays up to date.
It’s as tough as I’ve ever seen it. We’re getting by, though. Hope is a big thing. It keeps you moving and driving.
David Burton, CEO, Burton Pools & Spas, Fort Smith, Ark.
