One of a Kind

The homeowners were set on fiberglass for its durability and easy maintenance, but also wanted a level of customization not often associated with the material. Todd Emmerson delivered on their demands by trimming down the sides of a compact pool and merging it with two tanning ledges.

A shallower ledge on one side provides a wading area for the family’s three children. A second, crescent-shaped ledge was attached on the other side of the pool and cut along its front face to create a spillover waterfall into the pool.

To ensure structural stability for his unique design, Emmerson added more than 20 concrete pillars around the shells. The outside perimeter of the finished pool was framed with black granite and 1-inch glass tile.

Spa Surround

An adjacent stone grotto houses a spa featuring a custom concrete lid and a tile surround with built-in drink holders. “When I started doing this 12 years ago, fiberglass pools were a basic shell. It’s come a long way and the perception about fiberglass pools is really changing. People want the benefits of fiberglass, but they also want all the high-end features. We have to catch up and find ways to do it,” Emmerson says.
