Pool & Spa News is launching a revamped Top 50 Builders awards program.

Set to debut in June 2012, the new program was developed with significant input from pool and spa builders, and will place an emphasis on customer service rather than relying solely on revenue as criteria. This was enacted in order to diversify the field of influential pool and spa contractors.

“We’re all really happy with this new program,” said Erika Taylor, editor of Pool & Spa  News. “It’s been an exciting challenge and a real pleasure coming up with a system that ranks builders in a way that’s even more relevant and fair.”

Started in 2002, the list has contained the 50 firms that generate the most revenue from residential construction and renovation. Rankings were determined based on information supplied by the builders.

In recognition of the fact that income is not the only measure of a top company, the tabulation method will be revised next year to judge builders on a more wide-ranging set of criteria, allowing medium and smaller-sized businesses to enter the fold. In addition to revenue, factors such as customer satisfaction, industry involvement and input from subcontractors will affect a company’s standing.

In addition, all 2012 applicants will receive a benefit that will help their businesses regardless of whether they appear on the final list.

Pool & Spa News has commissioned a third-party company, Atlanta-based GuildQuality, to perform customer-service surveys for all entrants. The firm, which specializes in contractors, will contact former clients and learn their impressions of each company’s expertise, customer service and professionalism. This customer service score along with individualized input will be provided to all those applying to appear on the Top 50 list.

The new program also has moved its publication date from August to June. Application forms will be available online beginning Dec. 1.
