Pool industry giant PoolCorp has solidified its presence in Spain with the acquisition of Proplas Plasticos. The Madrid-based distributor handles pool equipment in addition to irrigation and plumbing materials.
“Wherever we have a very low [market] share, we’ll be looking to expand,” said Manuel J. Perez de la Mesa, president/CEO of Covington, La.-based PoolCorp. “It’s not that we’re [immune] to the economic environment around us, but if something makes sense, we have the financial wherewithal to do it.”
The company will be looking to take advantage of Proplas’ centralized location, client relations and technical support network, de la Mesa said.
The acquisition was signed on Oct. 31, 2008, and announced to the public at the Salon Piscine trade show in Lyon, France, several weeks later. Terms of the deal were not available as of press time.
PoolCorp first entered the Spanish market in 2003 with the purchase of Hayward Iberica, a distributor and subsidiary of Hayward Pool Products with offices in Madrid and Valencia.Proplas owner Angel Rodriguez Lopez now will assume the role of CEO for SCP Spain and work to strengthen the company’s presence in the industry.
“There are much more distinct differences between countries vs. different [regions of the United States] … so having local presence and local leadership is critical,” de la Mesa noted.
Working under Sylvia Monfort, general manager of SCP Europe, Lopez will supervise a handful of sales offices in the country as well as two distribution centers in Madrid.
PoolCorp moved into the European market in 1998 and operates 13 distribution agencies in five countries.
