Because a magnificent house was this property’s centerpiece, an uncluttered pool layout was essential for the homeowners.

No distractions

Because a magnificent house was this property’s centerpiece, an uncluttered pool layout was essential for the homeowners. Even the patio reflected the project’s refined lines. “We wanted to make a more formal type patio plan,” Brian Larsen says. “You don’t want to do curvy when you can do elegant, so that’s why we came up with the more square design.”

The pool area’s classical elegance accents the house, rather than distracting from it. But along with the design, the view mattered greatly to the homeowners. “[The homeowners] didn’t want to block [their] windows … with the pool,” Todd Emmerson explains. “So we had to drop the elevation pretty quickly there.”

As the team designed the retaining and seating walls, they knew it was important to keep them short. “I didn’t want to make the retaining wall the focal point,” Larsen says, “so I just went with a really simple, clean wall. We did the same thing for the seating walls at the ends.”

No distractions

A pergola stands at one end of the deck, providing a gathering area and focal point for the yard. The homeowners had seen a similar pergola while on vacation, and they asked for one to be added to the project. As the team integrated the new feature into the design, they stayed true to the low-profile plan. “We didn’t want to obstruct any of the views,” Larsen says, “so we left a clear view across the whole deck area.”
