Whenever I have the opportunity to talk with readers, I always ask what they like seeing in the magazine and what they wish we would cover more often. Obviously, our news section is popular, as are the how-to articles.

But another area that people enjoy reading about is products. So, back when we started our e-newsletter, we decided to include a section called “Retail Raves,” which would delve into a given product from the perspective of someone selling it.

The concept was a hit. We received a lot of positive feedback about the idea and so, after some discussion, we decided to include a “Retail Raves” column in the magazine as well.

Beginning with this issue, the page will appear once a month. In it, we ask a retailer to tell us about a particular product that’s doing well — preferably something new or a little unusual. They’ll describe the item, talk about why they like it and explain how they sell it.

The section is completely written by retailers for retailers, and I’m proud to tell you that I do not influence which products are featured. (I say “proud” because in the trade magazine world, there are weaker publications that embrace a different philosophy. They will often give manufacturing companies prominent coverage in exchange for advertising dollars — a practice we don’t condone because it weakens our readers’ trust.)
