Filbur Sponsors Triathlon

Filbur Manufacturing, maker of pool and spa cartridges and grids based in Buena Park, Calif., recently supported the Challenged Athletes Foundation with volunteer time and monetary contributions as a silver sponsor of the 19th Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge. The day-long event, held in La Jolla, Calif., drew more than 5,000 supporters — spectators and participants — and raised $1.4 million. It featured a “challenge” distance triathlon, consisting of a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike ride and 10-mile run, in which more than 200 challenged athletes competed side by side with 500 able-bodied athletes. In addition, CAF conducted four sports and agility clinics, each designed to teach challenged athletes the skills they need to succeed in sports. Funds raised allow CAF to support challenged athletes by providing grants for adaptive sports equipment, training and competition expenses so they can live active lifestyles and participate in sports.

“Being part of CAF’s SDTC is truly a life-changing event for all involved — spectators and participants alike,” said Shelly Johnson, marketing manager at Filbur. “Most people don’t realize the financial implications of the equipment and support involved in getting just one challenged individual back on his/her feet … both literally and figuratively. Filbur Manufacturing is proud to part of something so important and positive.”

IPSSA Introduces ‘Fast-Track’ Membership

The Independent Pool & Spa Service Association has adopted a rule making it easier for some pool service technicians to become members of the organization.

Previously, all prospective members had to pass IPSSA’s water chemistry exam before they could join the group. Now, if a tech has one of six certifications, he or she may fast-track their IPSSA application, and will have up to a year to take the water chemistry test.

  • The certifications are:
  • Current Certified Pool Operator certificate
  • Valid Los Angeles County Public Health certification
  • Completion of APSP Tech 1 or Tech 2 course
  • Valid state of Florida Certified Pool Contractor (CPO)
  • Valid state of Georgia CPO
  • Valid state of Texas CPO (must also attend three of four meetings)

The association’s chapters and regions also may set additional standards for membership if they desire. Upon joining IPSSA, members are eligible for all the group’s benefits, including insurance coverage.
Variable-Speed Pumps Get Energy Star Certification

Pentair Aquatic Systems announced that four of its variable-speed pumps have been certified to carry the Energy Star label. This is the first time the Environmental Protection Agency has certified pool equipment to carry the Energy Star designation.

IntelliFlo Variable-Speed Pumps, IntelliFlo VF pumps, IntelliPro VS+SVRS pumps and IntelliFlo VS+SVRS pumps have been certified to carry the Energy Star label.

The designation will help consumers choose more energy-efficient options when installing and replacing equipment. In addition, it might make it easier for utilities to give rebates on qualifying products.

Pentair pumps with the Energy Star logo are being shipped now. Purchasers should check with their distributors for availability. Additional pump models will be certified as Energy Star-compliant in the near future.

To qualify for the Energy Star designation, in addition to being energy-efficient, products must have the features expected by consumers. They also must save enough energy that a purchaser will be able to recoup additional costs through energy savings in a reasonable period. In addition, efficiency in a product category must be achieved through broadly available, nonproprietary technologies offered by more than one manufacturer.
