NSPF Awards Grants, Fellowships
The National Swimming Pool Foundation has awarded three research grants and three board fellowships totaling more than $175,000 for 2005. To help reduce outbreaks caused by chlorine-resistant pathogens, NSPF of Colorado Springs, Colo., has extended its grant of $120,000 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for a second year. Drs. Christine Moe and Scott Bartell of Atlanta’s Emory University received $7,088 to publish data analyzing public pool water. Another $12,000 in fellowships went to researchers Dr. Alex T. Chow, University of California/Davis; Luke K. Jacobs, Ohio Health Department pool inspector; and Ellen Jones, University of Arizona student. Aqua-Flo Expands
Chino, Calif.-based Aqua-Flo Inc. has added a warehousing and distribution center to its operations. The original facility was no longer able to house the firm’s recent growth, according to company officials. The additional location will process all product shipping and receiving orders, as well as warehouse the pump manufacturer’s inventory. However, all administrative and manufacturing functions will continue to operate out of the company’s original factory, also in Chino. As of Nov. 1, Aqua-Flo has been open for business at its new address: 5002 Lindsay Court, Chino, CA 91710.

SPP Partners with Optimus

Spa Parts Plus of Prescott Valley, Ariz., has entered a reciprocal shipping arrangement with Optimus, LLC, of Memphis, Tenn. According to the agreement, each distributor will warehouse and ship product for the other. The deal, said SPP President Bob Allard, will help lower freight costs to SPP customers east of the Rocky Mountains and reduce shipping time to one to two days in those areas. For Optimus, the arrangement will give it a shipping presence in the West without duplicating administrative staff. Both companies will remain independent firms, though.

APSP Doubles Instructor Credit Hours

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals has doubled the number of education credit hours that instructors of APSP-accredited programs are entitled to receive. To encourage more instructor participation in the continuing-education programs, the policy change gives them two hours of credit for every hour of actual instruction. According to APSP Director of Education Ken Suzuki, the new directive takes into account the instructor’s preparation time for each class and “gives instructors a greater incentive to step up and teach classes for the industry.” The policy also enables instructors to more easily meet the revalidation requirements necessary to maintain their APSP certifications. APSP is based in Alexandria, Va.
