Magic Johnson is Keynote Speaker at Cal Spas Dealer Expo
National Basketball Association legend Magic Johnson will be the keynote speaker at Cal Spa’s first-ever dealer expo Jan. 8-10, 2004. Free to preregistered Cal Spa dealers, the event will be held at the Ontario (Calif.) Convention Center.

According to the company, the 20,000-square-foot exhibit hall will feature more than 600 products by 50 major manufacturers, in addition to the Pomona, Calif.-based spa maker’s own merchandise. Also on tap are sales-oriented seminars and the unveiling of the firm’s Delphi Concept Project, a 10-step retailer program. Activities include dinners with live entertainment and a plant tour. Some lucky dealer will win a 42-foot, flat-screen plasma television in a giveaway, announced by Johnson. French Pool Show Slated for 2004
Piscine 2004, the world trade show for all kinds of pools, returns to Lyon, France, Nov. 16-19, 2004. Known as a key international show, Piscine aims to provide practical business opportunities for pool professionals interested in discovering the latest innovations or trends and gauging the market.

The show will feature approximately 450 exhibitors from 30 countries, divided into four products categories: public and private pools; pool surroundings (outdoor furniture, tiles, barbecues and the like); health and fitness (spas, hot tubs, saunas and more); and lighting. International Builder Show Coming to Las Vegas

Former President George H.W. Bush will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremonies of NAHB’s International Builders Show. Slated for Jan. 19-23, 2004, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the show is expected to attract more than 90,000 attendees from 100 countries. Approximately 1,400 exhibitors will display the latest in home and building products. Seminars will cover cutting-edge design, technologies, trends and more. Marquis Spas Grants Wishes for Kids

Marquis Spas, an Independence, Ore.-based manufacturer of spas, has partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Aquatech Pools & Spas of Sandy, Utah, to provide spas for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

For the past three years, Aquatech has participated in the In the Spirit of a Wish program, a program created by Marquis to benefit Make-A-Wish chapters nationwide. Besides serving as the preferred provider for Make-A-Wish spa wishes, Marquis and its dealer network have committed more than $650,000 to the foundation. Beachcomber Aids Canadian Olympic Athletes
Beachcomber Hot Tubs, based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, has donated $75,000 to the See You in Athens Fund, which was established to assist Canadian athletes with training, equipment, travel costs and living expenses. The fund provides grants to athletes trying to qualify to represent Canada during the 2004 Summer Games, set to be held in Athens, Greece.

Beachcomber owner Keith Scott is urging other Canadian corporations to come forward to help the organization meet its goal of providing $5 million in aid to the athletes, 70 percent of whom live under the poverty line. Genesis 3 Gets New Coordinator
The Genesis 3 Design Group has hired Lisa Haberkorn to serve as its director of operations. Haberkorn, president of the event-management company Limitless Boundaries in Murfreesboro, Tenn., also manages NSPI Region 10’s Southeastern Pool & Spa Show and formerly worked for the Florida Swimming Pool Association.

With Genesis 3, she will manage the group’s design schools and seminars, as well as appearances and presentations by its founders.

Pulliam Pools Wins Family Business Award from Baylor
Among honorees in the 14th Annual Texas Family Business of the Year competition, sponsored by Baylor University’s Institute for Family Business, was Pulliam Pools of Fort Worth. A total of more than 100 Texas companies were nominated for awards.

Pulliam was honored in the category of “Small Family Business (50 or Fewer Employees)” at the recognition banquet in late October. Two years ago, the builder also received the award. Third-generation owner Barry Pulliam said he felt fortunate to be singled out for the honor. Pulliam currently employs a mother/son team, a father/son team and three members of the Pulliam family.

Author Calls for Photos of Upscale Installations
Author Alan Sanderfoot is calling for builders, dealers and architects to submit photos of their more lavish installations for possible inclusion in a new book he is working on, tentatively titled Building Spas, Saunas and Steam Baths. The book aims to provide readers with design inspiration and serve as a how-to manual for do-it-yourselfers. It is scheduled to be published by Storey Books in 2004 and will be distributed in both traditional bookstores and through Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse stores.
