T
he NSPI Retailers Council’s new chairman, Steven Metz, plans to focus on building membership in 2002.

In recent years, council members have struggled to attract new members and are in particular need of representatives from the Sunbelt states. Part of the new effort to recruit members will involve a marketing program directed at retailers.

“I feel the biggest challenge facing the council right now is getting retailers to understand the benefits of NSPI membership and how to get the full value out of the programs that are offered to members,” Metz said.

He pointed out some of the values of NSPI membership, including networking, insights into how to run a business more efficiently, and the opportunity for veterans to share their expertise with newer members.
“Anytime you take the show and put it in two locations, you’re going to have logistical problems,” McConnell said. “Overall, I feel good about the show. We’re dealing with some different dynamics in the economy and people’s willingness to travel. I think we met people’s expectations coming into the show.”
