Dan Waters, principal of Creative Environments in Tempe, Ariz., wanted revelers at this Chandler, Ariz., aquascape to find fire everywhere. Four open fire pits surround the pool, spa and terrace.

As he notes, there’s “one near the spa for intimacy, one near the cooking area for light, and near the bar for heat, and one by the sitting area for balance and entertainment.”

The fires are scattered around the yard to provide several places where frequent guests will want to congregate. On quiet evenings, the clients can use just one pit to heat up a small gathering or to provide romantic firelight.

Each fire pit operates individually. Homeowners manually control the amount of gas released with a gas key, then light the unit manually with a match.

Waters took the lighting options farther with three additional artificial lighting systems: bright overhead halogens, recessed low-voltage fixtures and pool lights. Used together or in various combinations, they can create a sumptuous ambiance or intensely illuminate rocking parties.

“The light mixes with the sound and movement of fire and water, so you can have a variety of things going on to draw people’s attention,” Waters says. “Or just turn on one thing for intimate moments.”
